  • The Department's Office of Educational Research and Improvement sponsors five National Institutes to carry out programs of educational research in their topical areas. The following reports are produced by the National Institute of the Education of At-Risk Students:
    • From At-Risk to Excellence is a newsletter published by the National Institute on the Education of At-Risk Students. This newsletter is part of the Institute's ongoing effort to provide leadership and research-based information to members of the education community who may not be researchers. By translating technical research findings into practice-oriented strategies, and by disseminating useful research-based information to policymakers and administrators, the institute hopes to help those most likely to effect changes in schools that serve large numbers of at-risk students.
    • Family Involvement in Children's Education: Successful Local Approaches (October 1997) identifies and describes successful strategies used by 20 local Title I programs that have overcome barriers to parent involvement. This publication suggests ways that schools, families, and communities can work together to build strong partnerships. Although the most appropriate strategy for a particular community will depend on local interests, needs, and resources, successful approaches to promoting family involvement in the education of their children share an emphasis on innovation and flexibility.
    • Reaching All Families: Creating Family-Friendly Schools (August 1996) presents accumulated knowledge and fresh ideas on school outreach strategies. With them, schools can reach out to all families and help involve them in their children's education.
