Minnesota’s Character Education project, "Community Voices and Character Education," is a partnership among the Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning; the Minnesota Center for the Study of Ethical Development at the University of Minnesota; and participants from Minnesota schools.

The goal is to provide middle school students with classroom experiences that integrate character and standards-based education. Specifically, the project will help students develop skills for behaving ethically, provide inservice training for teachers on the process model of ethical behavior, solicit community involvement at every step and conduct action research.

The foundation for the workshops for middle school teachers and district curriculum coordinators is provided by two books: Teacher Guidebook: Nurturing Character in the Middle School Classroom and Overview of the Guidebook, both developed by the Minnesota Center for the Study of Ethical Development. These resources, based on the Process Model of Ethical Behavior, integrate character and standards-based curricula.

Project staff will provide ongoing support for teachers to help them design and implement learning activities and resources. Materials submitted by teachers will be placed on both the project Web site maintained by the Center for the Study of Ethical Development and the Curriculum Repository Web Site established by the Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning.
