The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Sunnyvale Police Department announce today the arrest of two suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of approximately 7 lbs. suspected ice methamphetamine. Ice methamphetamine is a purified form of methamphetamine that is ingested by smoking. Its appearance is often described as that of broken glass or shattered ice. The purity is normally very high.

On April 19, 2005, in San Jose, CA, an undercover DEA Agent purchased ice methamphetamine from Daniel REYES. The same undercover agent later negotiated for a larger purchase of ice methamphetamine from REYES.

On May 18, 2005, after undercover negotiations, DEA Agents, with the assistance of Sunnyvale Police Department, arrested Daniel REYES (age 31, resident of Sunnyvale) and David GARCIA (age 33, resident of Sunnyvale), in San Jose. REYES and GARCIA were in possession of approximately 7 lbs. of suspected ice methamphetamine. Both REYES and GARCIA were arrested without incident.

DEA Special Agent in Charge Javier F. Peña stated that this is a significant seizure, adding that ice methamphetamine poses a real threat to the Bay Area due to its addictive properties. SAC Peña stated that DEA will continue to work in cooperation with its local counterparts to protect and serve the residents of the Bay Area from the dangers of illegal drugs.

This case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office, Northern District of California. Both defendants are charged with violation of Title 21 United States Code Section 841(a)(1) – possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven otherwise.
