United States Welcomes Afghan Government Agreement on Revenues

The United States welcomes yesterday’s agreement in Kabul among President Karzai, his government, the provincial governors and other regional leaders to establish a mechanism that will centralize Afghanistan's public revenues into an accountable framework established by the central government. The United States urges the implementation of this agreement and offers technical assistance to that end.

We remain committed to working with President Karzai and his team as they build the institutions of government and bring the benefits of peace and stability to every region of Afghanistan. The American people provided over $900 million in assistance to Afghanistan last year and will match that level this year as well. A key priority of our assistance is to help the Afghan government rebuild the infrastructure and institutions of Afghanistan and lay the groundwork for constitutional government and free and fair elections next year.

The United States and other international donors will continue to contribute to the needs of Afghanistan and to support Afghan efforts to build a self-sufficient country. This agreement is an important step forward for all Afghans.
