| Press Statement Richard Boucher Washington, DC February 20, 2002 U.S. Contributes $125 Million to the United Nations High Commissioner for RefugeesThe United States has provided an initial contribution of $125 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for its 2002 Annual Program. This contribution will allow the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to provide protection and assistance to the 21 million refugees and other persons under its care as the year 2002 begins. The U.S. Government’s $125 million contribution to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees will be allocated as follows:
Africa $56.0 million Western Hemisphere $ 3.5 million East Asia $ 3.5 million Global Operations $10.0 million Europe $23.0 million Headquarters $ 8.0 million Near East $ 3.0 million Unallocated $ 6.0 million South Asia $12.0 million The substantial allocation for Africa reflects our continued concern about the needs and standards of care for the millions of refugees in Africa. Other priority areas include Afghan refugees and the continuing return home of refugees in the Balkans. In separate contributions earlier in the fiscal year the U.S. contributed $20 million to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to assist Afghan refugees. The United States believes that the protection and care of refugees and the pursuit of permanent solutions for refugee crises are shared international responsibilities and calls on other donors to strengthen their efforts in support of the programs of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
