Mr. Correll joined the Employment Standards Administration (ESA) in November 2006 as a Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary, becoming the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Operations in March 2008. He serves as the principle advisor to the Assistant Secretary for all program areas encompassing the operational management of ESA, and serves as the focal point for accomplishing and evaluating broad agency operations to assure accomplishment of ESA’s responsibilities nationwide. His specific focus includes budget, financial management, internal review and controls, human resource management and equal employment opportunity, safety and health, information technology, management analysis and planning, FOIA and general administrative services.

Mr. Correll began his Federal career in July 2002 as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Operations in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), where he was responsible for management of all aspects of agency operations. While serving in this capacity, Mr. Correll was selected as the Head of U.S. Delegation to China for coal mine safety (2003, 2005) and Poland for international mine rescue competition (2004).

Prior to Federal service with the U.S. Department of Labor, Mr. Correll was a safety and health professional in the mining industry. During his 28-year mining career he held senior safety & health leadership positions with Peabody Coal Company, Amax Coal Industries and Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. His management and leadership responsibilities included coal mining (underground and surface) and iron ore mining, milling and processing with mining operations throughout the U.S., Canada and the West Indies. Mr. Correll has served in executive leadership positions for numerous professional and industry boards and committees.

Mr. Correll is a career member of the Senior Executive Service. He received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Safety Management and Environmental Health from Indiana State University, and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Indianapolis. He holds professional certifications from the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals as a Certified Mine Safety Professional, and from the World Safety Organization as a Certified Safety Executive. John and his wife Nancy have two sons and two grandsons living in Cleveland, OH. Mr. Correll served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 – 1972 and is a Viet Nam Veteran.
