Drug-Free Workforce Promising Practice

The goal of building community safety and health is everyone’s responsibility, and together we face these challenges with one voice. Our employment programs are comprehensive, and their success depends on how well we collaborate with other community agencies and organizations.

Wings of Faith, Inc.

Wings of Faith, Inc. is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, multicultural, ecumenical faith-based organization that has pioneered many community initiatives and partnerships in Wayne County, Michigan. Wings of Faith provides education, training and capacity building to faith-based and community-based organizations, thereby strengthening their voices in improving the health and safety of their community, government and employment environments. Specific activities and programs include:

Michigan Reentry Initiative-Walk With Me Program: Targets serious and violent adult offenders aged 18-35 and creates a structured reentry system that focuses on institutional readiness, community reentry and stabilization. The program has three phases: Phase 1/Going Home (protect and prepare, an institutionally-based program); Phase 2/Welcome Home (control and restore, community-based transition); and Phase 3/Staying Home (responsibility and productivity, long-term support).

Michigan Reentry Initiative—The Family Independence Agency: A collaborative project with the U.S. Department of Justice/Office of Justice Programs/Family Independence Agency/Central Care Management Organization that provides mentoring services to at-risk you ages 13-17. The program uses faith-based and community-based organizations as service sites.

Faith-Based Employment Connection: An employment system that uses linkages with faith-based and community-based organizations for job referrals. The program is designed to immediately disseminate information about job openings to job seekers and serves hard-to-place individuals by assuring a direct line to where they are most likely to assemble for information and social services.

Strategic partnerships are key to the success of these Wings of Faith initiatives. Federal partners include the U.S. Departments of Justice, Labor, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Education, Agriculture, Commerce, Interior and Veterans Affairs and the Small Business Administration. Local partners include the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, City of Detroit Employment and Training Department, local and state law enforcement agencies and the Office of Substance Abuse, Faith-Based and Community Organizations.
