ONDCP to Host Student Drug Testing Summits
in 2007

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has announced that it will sponsor four Student Drug Testing Summits in the New Year.

Designed to address relevant legal and program development issues related to student drug testing, the summits will serve as an introduction for schools that would like to learn more about testing programs.  The events also will feature new information for schools that already have a student drug testing program in place, and offer information about Department of Education grants for testing programs.

Summit dates and locations are as follows:

January 24, 2007          Charleston, South Carolina

February 27, 2007       Newark, New Jersey

March 27, 2007           Honolulu, Hawaii

April 24, 2007              Las Vegas, Nevada

According to the 2005 Monitoring the Future report, over half of all high school students have tried an illegal drug.  Random student drug testing is a valuable prevention strategy that can help deter children from initiating drug use.  It can also identify children who have just started using drugs as well as children who have a dependency so that they may be referred to treatment.

Student drug testing programs developed by schools are specifically tailored to the needs of their particular communities.  All student drug testing programs are designed to act as a deterrent and are not punitive by format or nature.  To date, more than 912 schools nationwide have implemented programs.

There is no cost to attend the upcoming summits.  If you are interested in attending, please register at Office of National Drug Control Policy or contact bspencer@ondcp.eop.gov with any additional questions.
