I want to thank my good friend Nancy Brinker whose dedication to this cause in the memory of her sister and whose inspiring work is really the reason for this great morning. I did, indeed, lose my mother to breast cancer when I was 30. She was first diagnosed when I was 15. But, you know, I lost my mom in 1985, and I have to tell you it is a world of difference for those who are diagnosed with the disease today than in 1985, and it’s because we’re doing so much more in prevention and screening and so much more in finding therapies and so much more in helping people to live. But one day, we want to live free, completely free of this disease, and that’s the hope that this race brings today. And so, I want to thank each and every one of you for being here. I want to wish you luck in the walk or the run. Hopefully, the weather’s going to cooperate and it’s going to stay a little bit cooler. Take care of yourselves. And to help you do that, we’re going to do a little warm-up. There is a very important man in my life – that’s my personal trainer. And Tommy Tomlo, who keeps me fit, works me to death, is going to give us a chance to warm up a little bit before the race. |
