Details about the OSHA Fire Safety Advisor
The OSHA Fire Safety Advisor assists businesses and others to more efficiently and effectively understand and comply with OSHA's
workplace fire prevention and fire fighting safety rules. The Advisor provides the user with
an information-rich environment from which to learn about these OSHA rules. In response to
user-provided answers to questions about the workplace and about information sought, the Advisor provides
customized responses that fit the user's situation and needs. Throughout the Advisor highlighted terms
indicate the availability of additional information that can be viewed by clicking on the highlighted term.
The OSHA Fire Safety Advisor addresses only issues related to compliance with OSHA regulations. Fire safety also involves application of common sense
and informed professional judgement beyond compliance with minimum requirements of law. OSHA strongly
recommends that employers seek the advice of competent safety professionals to assist them in ensuring
that their workplaces are safe for their workers, for the public, and for themselves.
Fire Safety Standards in the 23 states and 2 territories that operate OSHA-approved State Plans
are either identical or "at least as effective" as the Federal OSHA standards. The OSHA Fire Safety Advisor's
guidance should be applicable in these states as well, although employers may want to contact their State Plan
officials with questions. In these states, Fire Safety Standards, including Fire Brigade provisions, are also applicable
to state and local government employers, including local fire departments.
