Career Development Resource Center (CDRC) (US-based)
CDRC offers noontime seminars, held once a month throughout the year, focusing on employment and career strengthening. Sample topics include: The Ultimate Resume, Writing Accomplishments Statements, Effective Job Interviewing, Professional Networking, Individual Development Plan, Life Cycle of a Job, and the Job Change Decision. Professional Development Fellowships for Foreign Service Family Members
This program is intended to maintain, enhance, and/or develop professional skills for Foreign Service Eligible Family Members and Members of Household who are not in a position to pursue their career path overseas. Read more

Functional Training for Foreign Service Family Members (US-based)
The Department of State is authorized to provide functional training to family members of U.S. Government direct-hire personnel anticipating an overseas assignment (section 704 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980). Functional training for anticipated prospective employment is offered to family members on a space available basis. To be eligible for most functional training, a family member must be a U.S. citizen whose spouse has been paneled for an overseas assignment. Email: FLOAskEmployment@state.gov for more information.

Transition Center Training Course List (Foreign Service Institute) (US-based)
At the Transition Center, a variety of courses are available for eligible family members in the areas of Foreign Service Life, Personal and Financial Planning, Foreign Service Families, Going Overseas, Expanding Employment OptionsReturning to Washington, and Security Overseas. Language Courses (Foreign Service Institute) (US-based)
Enrollment of family members in language training and area studies is coordinated through the Bureau of Human Resources/Career Development and Assignments.  The Department of State employee should contact his/her Assignments Officer for further information about enrolling a spouse in language training. Also see Distance Learning options and Post Language programs.  

Family members, who are affiliated with non-Department of State agencies and posted to U.S. Missions abroad, are subject to their Agency regulations, procedures and funding, and should seek guidance from their Agency regarding funding and enrollment procedures.

Language Training at Post (Overseas)
Check to see if your post offers a Language Training Program. And better yet, ask if your post has a Language Grant Program that provides money for grant-sponsored trips intended to immerse students in language and culture! Also see Language Distance Learning Opportunities

Manpower Inc. Training (US-based and Overseas)
Foreign Service family members can take advantage of Manpower training courses. Manpower offers hundreds of online courses which can be accessed online from anywhere in the world.

GEI/SNAP Workshops at Embassies and Consulates (Overseas)
The Global Employment Initiative/Strategic Networking Assistance Program (GEI/SNAP) offers workshops on a variety of employment topics at embassies and consulates overseas. Check to see if your post (or next post) has a Global Employment Advisor. Recent workshops held overseas have covered areas such as resume writing, interviewing skills, continuing education, nursing, ESL, tax issues, and transitioning back to Washington, DC.

Highlights

FLO on the Road Every two months, members of the FLO staff set up a table at the Foreign Service Institute to provide information on FLO resources and services (family member employment, education and youth issues, support services, unaccompanied tours, the CLO program, and more). Look for the FLO table at FSI 11:30 pm - 1:00 pm in the hallway between the bridge and the cafeteria, on Tuesday April 8 / June 17 / July 29 / Sept 30

Post Options for Employment and Training (MQ 703) 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.  Offered on March 20 / June 5 / August 19 FSI/TC trains participants to develop a comprehensive employment plan, to identify various employment opportunities and necessary training for overseas employment, and to develop a personal strategy for seeking paid or unpaid professional opportunities overseas. Home-based Business Workshop 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.  Offered on March 28 / October 8 The FSI Transition Center, in partnership with the Family Liaison Office, offers this workshop conducted by Staff Centrix. This program is designed to teach participants how to locate legitimate employment and freelance leads to develop home-based careers that are family-friendly, financially rewarding, professionally satisfying, portable, and in pace with the rapidly-evolving needs of the 21st century marketplace.
