Question Taken at the January 9, 2006 Press Briefing

Senior Delegation to Visit Ethiopia-Eritrea Border

QUESTION:   When will Assistant Secretary Frazer be traveling to the Ethiopia-Eritrea border?

ANSWER:   Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi E. Frazer will visit the Ethiopia-Eritrea border in mid-January. Five years after the signing of the Algiers agreements, which ended the 1998-2000 border war, it is clear that the boundary must be demarcated to finally resolve this crisis.

The United States has been an active participant in efforts to end the 1998-2000 Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict, as well as a prime architect of, and witness to, the Algiers agreements. In this regard, we are committed to assisting Ethiopia and Eritrea to overcome the current impasse over demarcation of their common border, and a return to a full normalization of relations. The United States will cooperate closely with the other witnesses to the Algiers agreements in these efforts.
