Subject: Withdrawal of CITES Trade Suspension for India

Background:  On December 22, 2004, the Service published a public bulletin informing the trade community that India had failed to adopt required CITES legislation or submit an adequate CITES legislative plan. At that time, commercial trade of CITES-listed species was suspended with India. CITES Notification No. 2005/011, issued March 14, 2005, notified the CITES countries that India has made good progress in the adoption of legislation for implementing CITES and has satisfied the conditions agreed upon by the CITES Standing Committee. Based upon this progress, the trade suspension for India is withdrawn.

Action:  Effective immediately, the United States will lift the prohibitions on trade in CITES-listed species involving India and allow the import, export, and re-export of CITES-listed specimens to and from India.
