Subject: Lifting of ban on the importation of CITES-listed live wildlife and wildlife parts and products from Madagascar.

Background:
On May 9, 2002, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced a ban on the importation of CITES-listed live wildlife and wildlife parts and products from Madagascar due to the lack of an official government. The United States has now officially recognized the government of President Ravalomanana.

Action:
Effective immediately, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will allow the import of CITES-listed live wildlife or wildlife parts and products from Madagascar with valid CITES documentation issued by the government of President Ravalomanana. Importers should be aware that all CITES documents will be verified before clearance is granted and shipments may be detained pending investigation into the legality of CITES documents. This notice supersedes and cancels the May 9, 2002 public bulletin on Madagascar.
