U.S. Support for Democracy in Peru

The United States is committed to supporting President Alejandro Toledo's work in consolidating democratic reform in Peru.

-- Since the beginning of the Toledo Administration in June 2001, the United States has provided $10.5 million in short-term programs to support decentralization (to include democratic training for local and regional leaders), civil-military relations, anti-corruption, congressional strengthening, and justice sector reform. Over the next five years, the United States will provide an additional $50 million.

-- The United States and Peru have signed an agreement to support the Toledo Administration's police reform projects with $130,000 in funding.

-- The United States will support the important work of Peru's Truth and Reconciliation Commission in investigating past human rights abuses with $3.5 million to help fund the Commission's operations.

-- In January 2002, the U.S. delivered a tranche of declassified State Department documents requested by the Peruvian Congress under the Freedom of Information Act in support of its ongoing investigations into corruption and abuses of the previous regime. The U.S. will continue this declassification work so as to be able to deliver documents as rapidly as possible.

-- The United States is exploring ways to support Peru's newly-launched "National Dialogue" on institutional, economic, and social reforms.
