Helping Those in Need

We have all watched in sorrow and with empathy the reports of the devastation and human suffering Hurricane Katrina brought to the Gulf Coast of the United States. Our hearts go out to the friends, families, customers and communities affected.

To aid those in need, Dell and its employees expect to donate up to $2 million dollars to the American Red Cross. These funds will augment a pledge of $5 million donated by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.

We encourage all who can to make their own contributions and invite you to visit the American Red Cross to make your donation. Your financial contribution can mean delivery of food, water, medical care and temporary shelter for individuals who truly need our help.

In the midst of this tragedy, Dell also remains focused on customers, and our effort continues to grow. Dell has agreed to provide extensive products and support to the affected areas and is working with customers, agencies and government officials to prioritize these requests. Dell's primary focus is on providing technology for emergency infrastructure support and evacuee management. The company also is focused on meeting children's needs, school infrastructure, and communications and connectivity for evacuees.

Dell has reached out to the governors of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, the mayors of New Orleans and Houston as well as the Red Cross and FEMA for prioritization of their needs. To date Dell has shipped more than 20,000 systems to the affected areas to aid in the recovery effort, including:
  • Donated hundreds of laptop systems to various Red Cross and United Way evacuee service centers for processing across the Southeast.
  • Donated laptops to SBC to set up communications infrastructure in the Houston Astrodome.
  • Provided the Baton Rouge Emergency Business Center, part of the Louisiana Department of Administration, with technology for use with relief aid and administration of the command center.
  • Loaned laptops to the Louisiana Department of Health for immediate health needs.
  • Provided FEMA with laptops at cost for evacuee management.
  • Donated servers to the Governor of Alabama's office to build the Alabamaserve.gov database to match donors with needs.
  • Given laptops to the Texas Health & Human Services to enroll evacuees coming into Texas and into Texas benefits programs.
  • Donated laptops to the Center for Disease Control for immediate field deployment to manage disease outbreak and health issues.
  • Loaned desktop systems and servers to the City of New Orleans for emergency infrastructure support; donated laptops to the State of Alabama for relief aid and evacuee management; donated laptops to the Texas National Guard for ground support being deployed in New Orleans; loaned laptops and printers to the State of Mississippi for emergency command operation; loaned laptops to the City of Dallas for relief aid and evacuee management; loaned laptops to the Louisiana DPS for increased police.
  • Donated servers and switches to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to build the Governor's Command Center.
  • Partnered with EMC to deliver servers and storage units to the Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical Center, making it possible to restore IT services and applications critical to treating those affected by the hurricane.

Dell will continue to address the needs of our fellow citizens and our customers in the wake of this tragedy as we learn more about those needs.
