The Death of Coretta Scott KingSecretary Condoleezza RiceWashington, DC January 31, 2006 It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Coretta Scott King in Atlanta. The United States and the world have lost a champion of human rights. Mrs. King was one of the pioneers in our country’s fight for equality and justice for all its citizens. Her courageous stand alongside Dr. King during a time of tremendous struggle for America was one of our greatest examples of selfless dedication to the good of all Americans. She continued that example throughout her life, keeping Dr. King’s dream of human rights and justice alive through her efforts to overcome poverty, unemployment, and racism – issues she believed to be the roots of violence. A devoted mother, Mrs. King gracefully balanced the demands of family with a career dedicated to non-violent social change. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this time of loss. 2006/123 Released on January 31, 2006 |
