911 rescue workers

The Rescue Workers of September 11, 2001
1894-1980

"I ask the American people to join me in saying a thanks for all the folks who have been fighting hard to rescue our fellow citizens and to join me in saying a prayer for the victims and their families. The resolve of our great nation is being tested. But make no mistake; we will show the world that we will pass this test. God bless." — President George W. Bush, September 11, 2001

On September 11, 2001, men and women from all walks of life engaged in a heroic effort to rescue survivors of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Fire and police departments from many jurisdictions, rescue squads, emergency medical technicians, construction workers, labor unions, volunteer building floor wardens, and countless others applied their skills and experience, working selflessly to assist others. When the World Trade Center towers collapsed killing 2819 people, 403 of them (one in seven) were rescue workers. The nation honors both these fallen heroes and the many hundreds more in New York and Washington who applied their hands and hearts in a selfless, humanitarian effort under difficult and dangerous conditions. The September 11 rescuers represent the best of America's working people, and the Nation must never forget their sacrifices.
