The July 15 Trilateral Summit in Sarajevo

Stephan M. Minikes, U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe
Intervention delivered to the OSCE Permanent Council
Vienna, Austria
July 18, 2002

Released by the U.S. Mission to the OSCE

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

The United States applauds the July 15th Tri-lateral Summit in Sarajevo and welcomes the progress made by the leaders of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in resolving regional issues.

This unprecedented meeting vividly demonstrates the leaders' commitment to normalizing relations and everyday life, and to continuing the dialogue necessary to achieve these goals. We are especially pleased by the scope of the leaders' commitments.

A coordinated approach to regional issues will foster normal good neighborly relations and will expedite resolution of the most difficult problems.

We welcome the leaders' willingness to adhere to international obligations to Dayton and to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, to facilitate the return of refugees and displaced persons, to promote free trade, and to develop a regional approach to terrorism and cross-border crime.

Mr. Chairman, the United States remains fully committed to supporting these efforts, and further urges, that on the basis of the commitments outlined by the national leaders, the OSCE do all that it can to support and to advance these challenging and important goals.

Thank you.
