History at the Department of Labor Historical Office The Historical Office of the U.S. Department of Labor maintains this Web site to provide basic information about the Department's history, present historical research the Office has produced, make selected Departmental documents available electronically, and guide users to additional resources, whether in hard copy or electronic format. The Office established the site in 1996, significantly revising and expanding it in 2002. The primary task of the Office, a division of the Center for Program Planning and Results (CPPR) within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management, is to perform research on the history of the programs and policies of the Department of Labor. Research may be used by policy makers, published in the form of books or articles, presented in conference papers, or provided electronically, often appearing in more than one of these formats. The Historian also conducts oral history interviews with Departmental officials when they leave office and responds to a wide range of queries from students and professional researchers, government staff, the news media, and the general public. The Historian assists with historical exhibits and commemorations at the Department. Exhibits in which assistance is provided include the Labor Hall of Fame and the "Century of Service Honor Roll of American Labor Organizations". The Historical Office maintains a collection of documents scheduled by the National Archives for permanent preservation. This includes speeches by Secretaries of Labor, Departmental press releases, oral history interview transcriptions, histories of the Department during various Presidential Administrations, and an annotated index to the Secretary of Labor's Correspondence Files in the National Archives.
