Remarks at the British Embassy in the United States

SECRETARY RICE: (In progress) express on behalf of the American people our solidarity with and concern for the people of Great Britain and particularly the people of London on this very sad day.

This is obviously an attack that demonstrates the barbarity of the terrorists with whom we are dealing. I want to express our sympathy and our prayers for the families of those who have died and our prayers and wishes for the recovery of the injured.

I also want to say that, of course, we have no better friend and ally in the struggle against terrorism than Great Britain. I know that as difficult as this day is and the kind of agony that it produces, the United States having been through this kind of agony, that it will, in fact, only strengthen the resolve of Great Britain, of Prime Minister Blair and his government, and of the people of Great Britain to make certain that terrorists know that they cannot win, that we remain resolved in our determination to root out this scourge against humanity and against civilization. These were simply innocent people, many of them on their way to work on a beautiful Thursday.

And so to the people of Great Britain, again, our deepest sympathies and our solidarity.
