NATO-Russia relations

In 2002 NATO member states and Russia established the NATO-Russia Council as a framework for consultation on current security issues and practical cooperation in a wide range of areas of common interest. The Council has proved useful for advancing a number of joint projects, as well as for holding regular political dialogue.

3 Dec. - Allied foreign ministers, meeting in Brussels on 2 and 3 December, stressed the importance of NATO's relationship with Russia. They also reiterated their negative assessment of some recent actions and statements made by the Russian authorities.

Statement by the Secretary General of NATO on the Russian recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

26 Aug. - I reject the decision of the Russian Government to extend recognition to the South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions of Georgia. This is in direct violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions regarding Georgia’s territorial integrity, resolutions that Russia itself has endorsed.
