Press Stakeout in Sydney, Australia

Christopher R. Hill, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs
Lobby of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Center
Sydney, Australia
September 5, 2007

QUESTION: Do you have time for a question?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: I’m really going somewhere. I’ve got to go. I’ll catch you later.

QUESTION: Please?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: Okay, one question.

QUESTION: Do you think it’s possible that North Korea can get off the terrorism list this year? I know the conditions that you have been stating in the past.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: We had some very good discussions with the North Koreans, and they know precisely what needs to be done. There is no ambiguity about it. They know very clearly.

Okay?

QUESTION: If they move fast, would it be possible this year, sir?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: Again, I don’t want to speculate.

QUESTION: Are you optimistic?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: I don’t want to speculate. (Laughter)

QUESTION: Thank you so much.
