Region 3 News Release Release Number: 06-532-PHI (osha 06-033) Date: March 29, 2006 Contact: Leni Uddyback-Fortson Phone: (215) 861-5102 OSHA Joins Associated Builders and Contractors to Protect Construction Workers
PHILADELPHIA -- Better health and safety for construction workers is the goal of a new strategic partnership launched today by the U. S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Southeast Pennsylvania Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) in Norriton, Pa. A key goal of the partnership is to increase the number of ABC member companies in the association's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) - a voluntary program that guides employees in evaluating and increasing the effectiveness of their safety and health programs, policies and procedures. OSHA's health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. The agency's area offices in Allentown and Philadelphia will represent OSHA in the partnership. "The Labor Department is committed to protecting the well being of construction workers," said OSHA Regional Administrator Richard Soltan. "This partnership is an important step towards meeting that goal in Pennsylvania." The ABC's Southeast PA Chapter in Norriton, one of 80 ABC chapters nationwide, has more than 400 members throughout the Delaware Valley, and is one of the leading chapters in the country. ABC Southeast PA has worked cooperatively with OSHA's Allentown and Philadelphia Area offices since 2001. Besides increasing the number of companies taking part in ABC's STEP Program, objectives of the partnership include reducing injuries from falls, struck-by and caught-in mishaps and electrocutions, and mentoring STEP applicants to move from Bronze to Platinum, ABC's highest STEP award level. Employers and employees with question about this or other OSHA partnerships may call either the Allentown (610) 776-0592 or Philadelphia (215) 597-4955 Area Offices or visit the OSHA Website at www.osha.gov. ###
