OSHA Recognizes Goodyear Chemical in Niagara Falls
for Excellence in Job Safety and Health

NEW YORK -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized Goodyear Chemical of Niagara Falls, NY, for high achievement in their employee safety and health programs.

Goodyear Chemical, which produces rubber antioxidant/antiozonant used in the manufacture of tires, has been designated as a "Merit" site in OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). Merit sites meet all safety and health elements for the program, which far exceed minimum OSHA standards. The Niagara Falls plant now joins an elite corps of about 1,180 workplaces nationwide that have earned VPP recognition.

"This award highlights the commitment to employee workplace safety and health demonstrated by Goodyear Chemical," said Mike Stratton, OSHA assistant area director. Stratton presented a VPP flag and plaque to the company in a recent ceremony.

The company has taken positive steps to make its worksite safer and more healthful and, notably, has done an excellent job of integrating employees into the plant's safety management system.

VPP offers employers an opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. The VPP programs are open to deserving employers in any industry.

Requirements for application to VPP include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high-quality worksite hazard analysis; prevention and control programs, and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before applying to join the program.

Additional information is available from the VPP manager at the OSHA regional office in New York City at 212-337-2360.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships, and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
