Achieves Outstanding Record for Four Years MATTHEWS, Mo. -- For four consecutive years, employees of Monsanto Ag of Matthews, Mo. have worked without losing a single day to an injury or illness. To mark this achievement, they and their company will renew their participation in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) at a recognition ceremony on March 3 at the plant. The Star-VPP is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The company initially was approved for OSHA's Star program in August 2000. The plant employs 70 workers who are engaged in crop preparation services for market. In addition to an exemplary safety and health program, there were no workdays lost to job-related injuries or illnesses from Jan. 1, 2000 through Dec. 31, 2003. "Monsanto Ag has exhibited excellence in effective safety and health management, worker training and involvement," said OSHA Regional Administrator Charles E. Adkins, CIH. "Top level management's active participation has been a key to the effectiveness of the company's safety and health program." There are 1,036 work sites nationwide in the VPP, representing 208 industries. Companies in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry. VPP work places have shown that safety and health are effective investments. VPP sites experience fewer employee injuries and illnesses, reduced workers' compensation costs, improved productivity, improved employee morale, and recognition in the community. Existing programs are further improved through regular reviews.
