Recognized by OSHA For Excellence in Safety and Health BILLINGS -- The PPL Montana - J.E. Corette Steam Electric Station was recognized today by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) site for excellence in their employee safety and health program. The electric power generation plant was designated a VPP "Star" site during a ceremony at the Billings plant. A VPP Star site, the highest level of recognition that OSHA offers, maintains employee injury and illness rates below the national average for their industry and meets all the safety and health program elements for the VPP program. "This VPP award recognizes the Corette plant's commitment to continual improvement," said Dave DiTommaso, OSHA area office director. "Moreover, the plant was able to qualify at the Star level on their very first attempt which is a tremendous accomplishment for such a large facility." DiTommaso and Brad Baptiste, OSHA VPP manager in Denver, presented a VPP flag and plaque to Corette employees at the ceremony. PPL Montana's safety and health program has many aspects considered "best practices" according to Baptiste. "The site has exemplary employee involvement systems, excellent pre-task planning procedures and an extremely thorough energy control program to protect employees," he said. OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs offer employers a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. About 1,300 work sites throughout the U.S have earned OSHA's highest recognition as participants in the VPP. More than 280 industries are represented within the programs. VPP participants typically achieve injury and illness rates more than 50 percent below their respective industry's average rates.
