Ceremony to be Held November 10 in Clayville, NY NEW YORK -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will recognize Homogeneous Metals, Inc., of Clayville, New York, for achieving four years of excellence in worker safety and health. A ceremony will be held at the company to celebrate its re-approval for participation in OSHA's prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). "This site's low injury and lost workday rates that have resulted from implementing effective systems, including training and employee involvement, are evidence of the continued efforts to improve safety and health conditions at the facility," said New York OSHA Regional Administrator Patricia K. Clark. The Clayville Homogeneous Metals, Inc. facility employs 109 workers who create high-grade super alloys used in the manufacture of jet engines for the military and airline industries. The company's facility was approved for OSHA's Star program in July 2000 and achieved an injury case rate in 2001-2003 that was 81 percent below the industry average. VPP offers companies a distinctive opportunity to move beyond traditional safety and health programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. The Star VPP program is open to companies with injury rates below the national average for their industry. Several requirements exist for application to the Voluntary Protection Programs, which have 1,178 sites throughout the U.S. and representing more than 200 industries. VPP sites must demonstrate a high degree of management support and employee involvement, high-quality worksite hazard analysis, prevention and control programs, and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each element must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before applying to join the program.
