GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized Hamilton Sundstrand, a United Technologies Company, for continued excellence in its safety and health program. The company was awarded the prestigious VPP STAR, one of the highest levels of recognition that OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) offers, during a Sept. 14 ceremony at its facility at 2800 Sundstrand Way in Grand Junction. "Approval for the STAR is a strong endorsement of the continued dedication demonstrated by Hamilton Sundstrand and its employees to workplace safety and health," said Bob Glover, OSHA assistant regional administrator in Denver. Glover, along with Bill Wright, OSHA regional VPP team leader, presented a VPP flag and plaque to Hamilton Sundstrand employees at the ceremony. VPP offers companies a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. A STAR VPP program is open to any industry, and to companies with injury rates below their industry's national average. Requirements for application to VPP, which has approximately 1,115 STAR sites in the country, include a high degree of management support and employee involvement, a high-quality worksite hazard analysis, prevention and control programs and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before applying to join the program.
