Lamu Cultural Festival

Embassy Nairobi was the principal supporter of the annual Lamu Cultural Festival, held July 30- Aug. 1, 2004. Amb. William Bellamy attended many of the Festival’s activities, which included a Kiswahili poetry competition, dhow, swimming, canoe and donkey races plus displays of traditional crafts and skills, concerts of taarab music and traditional dances. Both Lamu and Pate Islands are part of Kenya’s predominately Muslim coastal region. Ambassador Bellamy presents first prize to one of the swimming champions. State Department Photo
