National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska Northwest Area Plan includes Measures to Conserve Habitat |
The Northwest Planning Area is approximately 8.8 million acres managed by BLM and located on the North Slope of Alaska. A part of a recent planning process for oil and gas lease sales, the Service assisted the Bureau of Land Management in identifying approximately 3 million acres of biologically sensitive habitats worthy of special attention. Additional mitigation measures were crafted for habitat protection and to mitigate potential impacts to Pacific brant and other geese, threatened spectacled and Steller's eiders, yellow-billed loons, polar bears and other species of conservation concern. In a team effort, coordinated by Project Planning staff within the Fairbanks Fish and Wildlife Field Office, Service personnel across several programs were able to work with BLM to develop and improve mitigation measures for fish, wildlife and subsistence resources and still finalize the required Environmental Impact Statement within a two year period.
