Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC December 6, 2006 Presidential Delegation to Congolese InaugurationToday the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo inaugurate their first democratically elected president in over forty years. This historic event is the culmination of extraordinary efforts by the Congolese people to choose their leaders through a peaceful democratic process. The Congolese and their partners in the international community have achieved a framework for a strong democracy. The United States is proud to have played a role in the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in helping to empower the Congolese people to realize their national aspirations. President Bush's "Freedom Agenda" has been the impetus for our support. While we are mindful that much hard work remains, we welcome this opportunity to pause and celebrate the beginning of a new era for the Congolese people. |
