OSHA Signs Partnership To Promote Safe
And Healthful Nursing Homes in Illinois

AURORA, Ill. -- A partnership to help nursing facilities reduce injuries and illnesses from bloodborne pathogens, repetitive tasks, lifting, and other hazards was signed today by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, the Life Services Network (LSN) and the Life Services Network Workers Compensation Trust.

The partnership agreement to promote safe and healthful working conditions in nursing homes was signed in Brookfield. Members will work together to develop and deliver seminars addressing specific safety and health hazards in nursing facilities.

"Resident-handling and slips, trips, and falls account for the majority of injuries suffered by nursing home workers. This partnership is a great opportunity to expand worker protections and compliance assistance in this industry," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA regional administrator in Chicago.

LSN and Life Services Network Workers Compensation Trust members will be encouraged to participate in OSHA cooperative programs such as the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) and the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

The Life Services Network represents nearly 300 nonprofit nursing facilities in the state of Illinois. These facilities employ 23,000 staff members who provide care and assistance to more than 25,000 residents.

A team of representatives from the agencies will meet regularly to set goals and objectives and track their progress. The partnership will remain in effect for three years. Members may renew the partnership annually.
