Calpine Hidalgo Energy Center achieves recognition for safety and health excellence from U.S. Labor Department's OSHA

EDINBURG, Texas -- Calpine Hidalgo Energy Center in Edinburg, Texas, has earned membership at the "star," or highest, level of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). A recognition ceremony was held at the company's facility on 4005 N. Seminary Road in Edinburg.

"Calpine Hidalgo Energy Center has demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said OSHA Regional Administrator Dean W. McDaniel in Dallas. "The center's outstanding efforts include maintaining an injury and illness rate 100 percent below the national average for the industry."

The Calpine Corp. is headquartered in San Jose, Calif. The Calpine Hidalgo Energy Center in Edinburg employs about 25 workers who operate a 500 megawatt an hour electric-generating facility fueled by natural gas.

The Calpine Hidalgo Energy Center facility joins an elite corps of more than 1,790 worksites in more than 270 industries nationwide that have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Requirements include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high quality worksite hazard analysis; prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before a company can apply to join the VPP.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees.
