Ceremony To Be Held May 4 in Harpers Ferry, Iowa KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Effigy Mounds National Monument has earned membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A recognition ceremony is scheduled Wednesday, May 4. "Effigy Mounds National Monument has demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said Kansas City OSHA Regional Administrator Charles E. Adkins, CIH. "Their outstanding efforts include impressive management commitment and employee involvement." Effigy Mounds employs 33 workers who provide public tours and park maintenance. It is known for its numerous prehistoric earthen mounds, including about 30 in the shape of birds, mammals or reptiles. The Voluntary Protection Programs recognize and promote effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in the VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry. From coast to coast, approximately 1,200 work sites representing more than 200 industries participate in the programs. Information kits about the application and approval process are available from the VPP manager at the OSHA regional office in Kansas City, Mo., at (816) 426-5861. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
