Region 3 News Release: III-02-09-03-106-VW Date: Sept. 3, 2002 Contact: Leni Uddyback-Fortson Phone: (215) 861-5102 OSHA Recognizes Willow Island Plant For Safety And Health Success By Giving Highest Honor WILLOW ISLAND, W.Va. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration will induct the Willow Island Plant of Cytec Industries, Inc. into its Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) as a STAR site on Wed., Sept. 4, 2002, 4:00 p.m. Richard Soltan, OSHA regional administrator, will make the presentation at a special flag ceremony at plant headquarters, #1 Heilman Avenue, Willow Island, W.V The Cytec Corporation develops, manufactures and markets specialty chemicals and materials worldwide. One of Cytec's largest manufacturing facilities, the Willow Island site has been in production since 1947, and is a multi-product, multi-process chemical plant that supplies global markets in the paint and coatings, plastics and packaging industries. The first Cytec worksite to be recognized by OSHA for excellence in worker safety and health, the Willow Island site is one of 860 sites nationally to receive this honor. "The company's corporate mandate -- making worker safety a first priority in the way business is done -- is a very important reason for its safety and health success, its strong safety culture, and its lower injury and illness rates," said Soltan. "Corporate leadership, plant management, and employees all support strong safety and health measures as well as safety training." The site, which has received the West Virginia Governor's Safety Award for two consecutive years, is noted for having three-year recordable injuries and lost workday incidence rates that are significantly below the chemical industry's average. The STAR program, designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs, is open to any industry, and to companies with injury and illness rates below the industry's national average. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the Voluntary Protection Program is OSHA's premier recognition program designed to promote effective safety and health management by employers. ###
