MADISON, WIS. -- The Madison, Wis. area office of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has entered into a partnership with Cullen/Smith LLC to ensure the safety and health of workers during the renovation of Camp Randall on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Camp Randall, built in 1917, is the home of the University of Wisconsin's football team, and is the fourth oldest football stadium in the country. Renovations began in April 2003 and are expected to be completed August 2005. The project not only expands seating and customer service in the stadium, but also includes the construction of a four-story office building to house coaching personnel whose in-stadium offices will be removed. More than 250 workers will be employed during the 3 years the project is under construction. "This partnership will help improve safety and health for workers at all levels," said OSHA Area Director Kimberly Stille, Madison. Parties entering into the partnership include principals of Cullen/Smith LLC, local labor representatives' organizations, Wausau Insurance, and the Wisconsin Safety and Health Consultation Services agency. "The cooperative effort of all parties demonstrates our commitment to work jointly to protect workers through the elimination of workplace hazards and the overall reduction of injuries and illnesses," Stille said. Under the terms of the partnership, contractors must meet stringent safety guidelines that include: maintaining a site-specific safety and health program that ensures employee involvement; providing all new employees a comprehensive safety orientation, and providing training for employees on hazards and regulations applicable to their work. Additionally referrals to the State Health Consultation Service will be made when the potential for health issues such as carbon monoxide, silica, or large-scale use of chemicals in the building interior arise. In return for meeting these criteria, OSHA will not target the job site for planned or programmed inspections. OSHA would conduct unannounced inspections of the work site during the course of the construction project, which is expected to last for over a three-year period. OSHA will still conduct inspections in response to reports of imminent danger, a fatality or catastrophic accident.
