Goal to Train and Educate Local Construction Companies BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Buffalo area office and the Construction Exchange of Buffalo & WNY, Inc. have established an alliance to train and educate over 450 construction companies who are members of the Construction Exchange. The alliance seeks to develop training and education programs for construction companies in western New York encompassing construction-related safety and health hazards and to share best practices that have been implemented to eliminate or reduce those hazards. OSHA will also share up-to-date information, such as injury, hazard and workforce trends and the most frequently violated standards and other relevant enforcement updates so that member companies are aware of what to look out for when inspecting their jobsites. OSHA anticipates this will result in fewer workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses…what OSHA considers its "triple bottom line" in a results-oriented agency. "Alliances such as this spark innovative ideas within an industry. Construction is a very dangerous industry and has been the focus of OSHA for quite some time," said Regional Administrator Patricia K. Clark of OSHA's New York regional office. "When industry, labor and government all work together, we can accomplish more than through enforcement efforts alone." "The Construction Exchange of Buffalo & WNY, Inc. is looking forward to entering into an alliance with OSHA," said Jim Logan, the Construction Exchange's executive director. "Disseminating safety information, providing safety-related education and taking a proactive role in safety will help to provide a safer working environment for our membership and the WNY community." A team made up of OSHA and Construction Exchange members will meet regularly to share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance. Team members will include representatives of OSHA's Buffalo area office. The alliance will remain in effect for two years. The alliance was signed May 15 at the Western New York Safety Conference in Grand Island.
