New England Homeland Security Conference To Be Held At Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., May 27, 2004

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Workshops on a wide range of homeland security, worker protection and emergency management issues will be featured at the second annual New England Homeland Security Conference, May 27, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. John Henshaw, head of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), will keynote the opening session.

The conference is a collaborative effort among OSHA, the Department of Homeland Security/U.S. Coast Guard and the New England OSHA Training Institute and Education Center at Keene State College. It is designed for businesses, local and state government, police, fire and emergency medical personnel, the medical community, educators, unions, insurers, experts in risk communication and threat assessment, health and safety consultants, community groups, volunteer associations and other interested parties.

Topics include the role of frontline workers and citizens in protecting the homeland; lessons learned from World Trade Center recovery and cleanup operations; and community-based threat assessment and vulnerability analysis. Other workshops will examine emergency planning and response for the construction industry; response to chemical emergencies; New England state and local emergency planning exercises; and safeguards for workers responding to chemical/biological terrorism incidents.

OSHA's National Emergency Management Plan and the National Incident Management System will be reviewed, as well as preparedness and response to terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction; reducing the threat of violence in the workplace; and emergency management planning for schools. Sessions will also be held on the roles of the Medical Reserve Corps, disaster medical assistance teams and the disaster mortuary operational response system.

Presenters will include representatives from OSHA, the Coast Guard Academy, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Environmental Protection Agency, the FBI, Massachusetts National Guard, Yale University School of Public Health, Community Research Associates, Inc., Field Safety Corp., Center for Emergency Response Analytics, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, Mine Safety Appliances, Co., Inc., the New England Consortium, New Hampshire Bureau of Emergency Management, Yale New Haven Medical System and the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

The registration fee of $75 includes all sessions, lunch, break refreshments, continuing education credits and continuing medical education approval. The deadline for registration is Wed., May 19, 2004. Registration is limited to 800.
