Aims to Protect Workers on Cadbury Adams Project PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- Protecting workers constructing the Cadbury Adams Science and Technology Center Project in Hanover Township, N.J. is at the heart of a partnership recently launched by the Parsippany area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Skanska USA Building, Inc., the New Jersey OSHA Consultation Program and the Morris County Building Construction Trades Council. OSHA safety and health partnerships are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. Managed by Skanska USA Building Inc., the project involves the construction of four major buildings, due to be completed and occupied by December 2005. At the peak of the project, approximately 40 subcontractors, employing more then 150 trade workers are expected to be onsite. "With so many subcontractors involved in the project, this partnership will facilitate the kind of cooperation needed to ensure worker safety and health during construction," says Patricia K. Clark, OSHA regional administrator in New York. "We look forward to working successfully with Skanska USA in this effort." The goal of the partnership is to reduce project injury and illnesses by developing criteria for a model multi-employer worksite safety and health program. The program will identify the responsibilities of each subcontractor and will make safety and health materials available to all subcontractors onsite. It will include planning for safety and health in all aspects of the project to achieve illness and injury rates below the national average for construction industry. Participating subcontractors who voluntarily improve their safety and health performance will earn recognition from OSHA for their efforts and will be subject to fewer programmed inspections. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
