OSHA, Contractors, Consultants Form Partnership to Protect Workers
During Jacksonville Terminal Expansion Project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ensuring that construction workers have the safest and healthiest possible work site during the Jacksonville terminal expansion project is the goal of a partnership between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), general contractor Centex Rooney Construction Co./Aviation Constructors Inc. and the University of South Florida Consultative Service.

"This partnership, part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve worker safety and health through cooperative ventures, demonstrates that government, business and academia can work together to provide employers and employees with the tools necessary to develop an effective safety culture," said James D. Borders, OSHA's Jacksonville area director.

Borders added, "The tools to reduce injuries, illnesses and fatalities include establishing effective safety and health programs for the approximately 20 subcontractors and 300 workers at the site, and effective training for English and non-English speaking employers and employees."

This partnership covers the third phase of the $228 million project -- construction of three new concourses and the demolition of existing facilities. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2008. The terminal, when completed, will include a new parking garage, expanded check-in and baggage area, centralized security and the new concourses.
