U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA Recognizes Lititz Carrier Annex for Workplace Safety and Health Success

LITITZ, Pa. -- The U.S Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has certified the Lititz Carrier Annex of the U. S. Postal Service as a Star site in its Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

During a recent ceremony, OSHA Acting Regional Administrator Marie Cassady presented the center with a VPP Star flag. Also in attendance was Bob Fink, area director for OSHA’s Harrisburg office.

The Postal Service’s Lititz Carrier Annex processes both incoming and outgoing mail each day. Other operations housed at the Lititz facility include the customer service operations, carrier operations and a computerized forwarding system. The facility employs 70 people and is noted for having an injury and illness rate that is 68 percent below the industry average.

The Star program, designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs, is open to any industry and to companies with injury rates below their industry’s national average. The VPP currently encompasses more than 1,600 worksites with companies from more than 280 different industries. OSHA’s VPP has proven over the years to be an effective means of reducing injuries, illnesses, fatalities and costs, while fostering a more productive workforce and increasing employee morale.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA’s role is to assure the safety and health of America’s working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
