FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will actively support the Feb. 22 Construction Association of South Florida (CASF) 2007 Safety Expo, which focuses on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards in the construction industry. OSHA staff will conduct short presentations on the danger of injuries due to falls and other workplace hazards in the construction industry. A four-hour Safety Boot Camp will focus on the four primary hazards facing construction workers with the goal of reducing fatalities, injuries, and illnesses in the industry. Both OSHA staff and vendors will be distributing safety literature to employers and employees throughout the day. "Our ongoing alliance with CASF brings an increase in educational opportunities for employees in the construction industry," said John J. Deifer, OSHA's acting area director in Fort Lauderdale. "It is through training efforts, such as this Safety Expo, that we will see a reduction in fatalities." The CASF Safety Expo has become an annual event in response to workplace fatalities occurring in South Florida's construction industry. Since Oct. 2004, OSHA has investigated 85 fatal accidents in the construction industry in South Florida. Focusing on this problem, OSHA and CASF signed an alliance in Aug. 2006 to provide association members with information, guidance, and access to training resources to help them protect workers' health and safety. CASF is a non-profit organization whose members represent all aspects of the construction industry.
