Region 5 News Release V-43 Date: Oct. 25, 2002 Contact: Juan Solano Phone: (312) 353-6976 OSHA Signs Partnership with Illinois Small Business Development Center Network Goal to Promote Safe and Healthful Workplaces AURORA, Ill. -- A partnership to promote safe and healthful working conditions in small businesses was signed today by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program of Illinois (DCCA), and the Illinois Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC). "OSHA is committed to helping small businesses reduce injuries, illnesses and deaths in workplaces throughout Illinois," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA regional administrator in Chicago. The partnership members will work together to develop and deliver seminars addressing safety and health issues in small businesses. Small businesses will be encouraged to participate in OSHA cooperative programs such as Consultation's Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) and the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). Training seminars on machine guarding are scheduled at SBDC locations throughout Illinois. The Illinois SBDC Network has contact with over 50,000 small businesses each year through their statewide network of service centers. The network provides prospective and existing business owners with a variety of business resource programs. The State of Illinois Onsite Safety and Health Consultation Program provides free consultation service largely funded by OSHA. Primarily targeted to small businesses, the program is separate from OSHA's inspection effort. A team of representatives from the agencies will meet regularly to set goals and objectives and track their progress. The partnership will remain in effect for three years. The partnership may be renewed annually. ###
