Region 6 News Release: OPA-03-148 Mon., July 21, 2003 Contact: Diana Petterson or Elizabeth Todd Phone: (214)767-4776, Ext. 222 or 221 Federal Agencies and Partners Launch Asian American Worker Protection Program in Houston July 31 HOUSTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will join forces with various community, faith-based and local governmental organizations to launch The Information Group for Asian American Rights (TIGAAR). The launching ceremony will take place, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Southern News Group Building, 11122 Bellaire Blvd., Houston. The partnership will focus on providing compliance assistance to Asian American employers and educating Asian American employees on their rights in the workplace. At the event an accord will be signed by Charter Members. In addition, a video on workplace issues and a billboard providing the TIGAAR website address to obtain additional information will be unveiled. TIGAAR steering committee members include the Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division and Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the City of Houston Office of Council Member Gordon Quan and numerous Asian advocacy groups, including the Organization for Chinese Americans, Alliance for Multicultural Community Services, VN TeamWork, Lao American Association, Japanese American Citizens League, and Houston 80/20. Department of Labor, EEOC officials and community organization members will be available at the partnership launching for interviews. Please see contact information below to arrange an interview.
