Remarks Delivered by
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao
Prescription Drug Benefit Event
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Thursday, April 13, 2006

Secretary Leavitt, I am so pleased to be here with you to help get the word out about this important new prescription drug benefit.

I want to add my thanks to President Adamany and Temple University for providing such a wonderful facility for this very important event. Let me also thank the many community partners and organizations here today providing assistance to seniors.

I am delighted to see so many Asian Pacific Americans here. Just yesterday, I was with President George W. Bush as he spoke to a gathering of Asian Pacific Americans in Annandale, Virginia, about Medicare prescription drug coverage.

President Bush launched this program because he shares the deep appreciation, love and respect that our community has for our parents, and for all elderly members of our society. And he wants to ensure that they live healthier, happier and longer lives by taking advantage of the many new drug therapies that are available today.

We are here because we do not want anyone to miss out on this program. It's important to make a decision about prescription drug coverage before May 15th to take advantage of the lowest possible premiums. Please help spread the word by telling your friends and neighbors about this program, and how they can sign up and save money.

It can be a challenge to wade through all the plans, but the dramatic savings far outweigh the effort. People who join the Medicare drug plan are saving an average of $1,100 a year, compared to those without coverage.

So thank you for coming, and now let me turn things back over to Secretary Leavitt.
