Inc. for workplace safety and health success MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certified March-Westin Co. Inc. of Morgantown, W.Va., as a "merit" site in its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). During a recent ceremony at West Virginia University's Biomedical Research Facility, Stanley Elliot, director of OSHA's Charleston, W.Va., area office, presented the company with a VPP merit flag. "March-Westin has achieved an injury and illness rate significantly below the industry average," said Elliot. "The company expects to maintain its excellent record as it completes construction of West Virginia University's Biomedical Research Facility." When finished, the 120,000-square-foot facility will be used to conduct research in heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke and other serious illnesses. The four-story building will feature an open laboratory design and all glass exterior. More than 60 employees are expected to work on the project. March-Westin, headquartered in Morgantown, W.Va., is a full-service engineering, general contracting, and design-build firm. March-Westin's successful completion of the merit program will ensure eligibility for OSHA "star" designation, the highest level of recognition an employer can achieve in the VPP. Designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs, the VPP is open to all industries and to companies with injury rates below their respective industries' national averages. More than 1,945 worksites nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Over the years, the VPP has proven to be an effective means of reducing injuries, illnesses, fatalities and costs, while fostering a more productive workforce and increasing employee morale. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
