Region 3 News Release: 08-503-PHI (osha 08-056) April 17, 2008 Contact: Leni Fortson Phone: 215-861-5102 U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA launches alliance with Roofing Contractors Association and Roofers' Local #30 Goal is to promote safety and health for employees in local roofing industry PHILADELPHIA -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Roofing Contractors Association and the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers Local #30 have joined forces to promote workplace safety and health for employees in the local roofing industry. OSHA and alliance members officially began their partnership today with a signing ceremony at the roofers' union training facility in Philadelphia. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. The Roofing Contractors Association has a long-standing collaborative relationship with Roofers' Local #30, which supplies all of the association's manpower resources. A major goal of the alliance is to provide training to reduce or eliminate employee exposure to falls, as well as electrical and other roofing industry hazards. Alliance members will work together to establish a forum for the exchange of information on best safety and health practices in the roofing industry. "Roofing work historically has been an inherently dangerous construction operation," said OSHA's Philadelphia Area Office Director Albert D'Imperio. "This alliance will provide an avenue for OSHA to reach a community of small businesses and their employees with a variety of safety and health information." OSHA's Philadelphia Area Office, which is participating in the alliance, has jurisdiction over Philadelphia, Delaware and Chester counties. Its staff can be contacted at 215-597-4955. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
