UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 352,000, an increase of 23,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 329,000. The 4-week moving average was 335,250, an increase of 5,750 from the previous week's revised average of 329,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Nov. 17, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 17 was 2,665,000, an increase of 112,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,553,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,589,250, an increase of 20,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,568,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 323,171 in the week ending Nov. 24, a decrease of 174 from the previous week. There were 323,509 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Nov. 17, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,222,940, a decrease of 67,476 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,074,608.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 10.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,747 in the week ending Nov. 17, an increase of 40 from the prior week. There were 1,499 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 335 from the preceding week.

There were 15,263 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 10, an increase of 1,049 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,928, a decrease of 492 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 10 were in Alaska (3.2 percent), Puerto Rico (2.9), Michigan (2.8), Arkansas (2.5), New Jersey (2.5), Oregon (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), California (2.3), Rhode Island (2.3), and Massachusetts (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 17 were in Texas (+1,097), Kentucky (+797), Idaho (+341), Arkansas (+219), and Wisconsin (+209), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-6,493), California (-5,905), Puerto Rico (-3,882), New Jersey (-3,011), and Virginia
(-1,542).
