UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 321,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 341,000. The 4-week moving average was 332,000, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 329,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending April 14, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 14 was 2,594,000, an increase of 65,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,529,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,534,000, an increase of 19,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,514,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 300,511 in the week ending April 21, a decrease of 17,072 from the previous week. There were 291,349 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending April 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,641,046, an increase of 46,389 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,482,997.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending April 7.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 991 in the week ending April 14, a decrease of 214 from the prior week. There were 1,594 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 108 from the preceding week.

There were 12,742 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 7, a decrease of 3,102 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,857, a decrease of 463 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 7 were in Alaska (3.9 percent), Michigan (3.9), Wisconsin (3.3), Puerto Rico (3.2), New Jersey (3.0), Rhode Island (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.9), Vermont (2.9), Massachusetts (2.8), and Oregon (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 14 were in New York (+16,037), New Jersey (+2,943), Puerto Rico (+1,880), South Carolina (+1,553), and Indiana (+1,416), while the largest decreases were in California (-5,309), Pennsylvania (-5,150), Illinois (-3,319), Michigan (-2,552), and Washington (-2,175).
